Climate Summer

Climate Summer is a leadership development program for young adults organized by the Better Future Project. Participants travel exclusively by bicycle and call for action on climate change and fossil fuels in communities around New England.

2014 Climate Summer consists of 4 teams – which are focused on the Kinder Morgan Pipeline, Spectra Pipeline, and the proposed Salem natural gas plant.

Climate Summer riders work in small teams, connecting with, learning from, and supporting community leaders who are actively addressing society’s addiction to fossil fuels by crafting local solutions that strengthen communities. Riders bring with them a movement-building perspective, empowering those they meet and helping to highlight the important work of partner organizations by attracting local media attention and generating social media content.

The North Shore Team - Shreya Thatai, Kelly Chen, Abbie Goldberg, Sophie Sokolov, and Ariel Schwalb - has been focused on the plant this summer. To raise awareness, they have been involved in the local community, canvassing at the Salem 4th of July Festival at Derby Wharf, reading poetry in the Improbable Places Poetry Tour in the plant itself, and building sand sculptures representing the plant, as well as working closely with local groups such as GASPP and HealthLink.
